The term “direct marketing” brings up images of those soap and brush guys (you know who they are) pitching their health care products in teams of two where both parties insist that what you are hearing is not a sales presentation. They emphasize the importance of the products they carry and how everyone needs them, so they practically sell themselves. You buy into it because they seem like nice folks and then you don’t make a dime because everything you’re selling is available for half the price at your local supermarket. How did those guys become as successful as they are?
Those direct marketing companies, or network marketers as they are also known, became the successes that they are today by investing money into their ideas. That money came in the form of small business loans when they were first starting out and then what is called working capital finance once they were established. Companies like those soap and brush guys didn’t just make millions of dollars overnight. They needed to first establish a brand name, run a marketing campaign, buy inventory, and get out there and hustle. Those activities require funding. They found it and so can you.
Getting a start-up business loan if you have a good idea is not as difficult a process as you might think as long as you have good business credit. There are online websites you can go to where they specialize in finding financing for people just like you and can help you build credit. Direct marketing falls into the category of a retail business with many of them, so all you really have to do is prove that you have a product which will sell. Getting out there and making a few sales before you apply will be helpful. A solid business plan can’t hurt either.
Soap and brushes are sold in supermarkets, the place where most folks will go to buy them. If you’re going to direct market something, make sure that your presentation and branding sets you apart from anyone else, even if your merchandise is similar. Tweak the sales process and marketing as many times as you need to in order to find something that works. Then go get a loan and duplicate that process, either by yourself or by recruiting others and teaching them how to do it. Before you know it, your product will be the best thing to come along since … soap.<-->
